Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled Kernel Engineer (Part Time / Freelance) to join our team in building IndianBrand Mobile OS. This is a rare and historic opportunity to work on an operating system from the ground up. Phase 1 (bootloader, kernel, VGA driver, keyboard driver, basic shell) is already complete and working in QEMU. You will work on Phase 2 (memory manager, interrupts) and beyond. The role is 100% remote, with flexible hours (2-4 hours per day), and is ideal for self-motivated engineers who are passionate about low-level systems programming.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and improve kernel code in C - memory manager, interrupt handlers, process scheduler
• Write Assembly code for low-level hardware initialization
• Test kernel changes in QEMU virtual machine
• Document code clearly for the team
• Collaborate asynchronously with other developers via Git and email
• Research and implement OS concepts from OSDev Wiki and reference documents
• Contribute to Phase 2 (memory manager, interrupts) and subsequent phases including ARM64 phone hardware port

Tech Stack

• Languages: C (expert level), x86/ARM Assembly, optionally Rust
• Operating Systems: Linux (Ubuntu or similar)
• Tools: GDB, Git, QEMU, Bochs
• Concepts: Memory management, process scheduling, interrupts, device drivers, bootloader, kernel, GDT, x86 protected mode
• Version Control: Git

Required Skills:

• Expert-level C programming (comfortable writing C without standard library)
• Basic understanding of x86 or ARM Assembly
• Operating system fundamentals: memory management, process scheduling, interrupts
• Linux development environment (Ubuntu or similar)
• GDB for debugging compiled code
• Git version control

Nice to Have:

• Rust for memory-safe kernel components
• ARM64 experience for future hardware port
• Prior OSDev or embedded systems experience
• Familiarity with QEMU, Bochs, or other emulators
• Understanding of device drivers
• Computer Science degree or equivalent self-taught background

Experience: 2-6 years
